Company Overview
Oragenics is a publicly held biopharmaceutical company trading on the American Stock Exchange under the symbol ONI. The company is located in Progress Corporate Park at 13700 Progress Boulevard in Alachua, Florida, approximately 15 miles from the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Our corporate strategy is aimed at adding value to novel technologies and products sourced from innovative research at the University of Florida and other academic centers. Our aim is to develop products through human proof-of-concept (Phase I or II of the FDA's regulatory process) prior to partnering with major pharmaceutical, biotechnology or healthcare product firms for advanced clinical development and commercialization.
We are currently developing the following products, each of which addresses potentially major market opportunities: (click product name for details)
- Replacement Therapy is a single, painless topical treatment that has the potential to offer life-long protection from most tooth decay. We initiated Phase I clinical safety trials with this product in 2005. [MORE] >>
- Mutacin 1140 ("MU1140") is a licensed, patented technology that is an antibiotic peptide which is produced by our strain of S. mutans. It was discovered in the course of the research into our SMaRT Replacement Therapy technology. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has demonstrated potency in laboratory studies against essentially all Gram-positive bacteria against which it has been tested. [MORE] >>
- Probiora3 employs naturally occurring bacteria to confer a health benefit when administered in adequate amounts. Probiotics are widely accepted in Japan and Europe and acceptance in the United States is growing. The uses of yogurt containing live Lactobacillus cultures to improve digestion, immune system support or vaginal and urinary tract health are examples of common probiotic applications. [MORE] >>
- IVIAT and CMAT are two related platform technologies that enable the simple, fast identification of novel and potentially important gene targets associated with the natural onset and progression of infections, cancers and other diseases in humans and other living organisms, including plants. These technologies offer us the potential to generate and develop a number of product candidates for future out-licensing to corporate partners, particularly in the area of cancer and tuberculosis, as well as agricultural and other non-human uses. [MORE] >>
- DPOLT Differentially Protected Orthogonal Lantionine Technology (DPOLT) is a solid phase peptide synthesis platform technology that has broad application for the cost-effective manufacture of a number of commercially important bioactive peptides. Lantibiotics, including our lead antibiotic, MU1140, are a potentially important class of antibiotics. Many strains of medically important bacteria have become increasingly resistant to currently marketed antibiotics. [MORE] >>
- LPT3-04 Weight Loss Agent Oragenics' small molecule weight-loss agent. As a natural substance, LPT3-04 is orally available and has an excellent safety and tolerability profile. The prevalence of people who are overweight has increased significantly in the past few decades, with huge public health costs attached to it. [MORE] >>
Company History
Dr. Jeffrey Hillman began his basic research into the concept of Replacement Therapy for preventing dental caries or cavities in the late 1970s at the Forsyth Dental Center in Boston. He transferred his research to the University of Florida College of Dentistry in 1992. There, he continued to pursue the development of a genetically engineered strain of Streptococcus mutans that could both prevent cavities and replace the body's natural caries-causing strains of S. mutans.
Dr. Hillman and Dr. Robert Zahradnik founded Oragenics at the end of 1996 to commercialize the fruits of 25 years of research.
Oragenics' Board of Directors includes Dr. Hillman, Chief Scientific Officer, Stanley B. Stein, President and CEO, who joined Oragenics in January 2008, and David Gury, who serves as Chairman.
